A Funny Thing About Employees
Making the Intangible, Tangible, to
Attract, Develop and Retain Top Talent

Picture
What turns customers into raving fans? What increases sale? What attracts the best new-hires?  What keeps your best employees happy?  Culture. But what is it?
"Culture eats strategy for breakfast" ~ Peter Drucker

It's funny how we talk about engagement, generational differences, what employees want, shifting culture, working remotely, diversity, communications, trust, ethics... and most can't measure any of it, and we know that what gets measured, gets managed.

Sure, studies measure employee engagement and you can track turnover and its high cost. What if you could measure the actual current culture itself? What if you could determine where the pitfalls are, how to measure progress over time, and how to connect it to sales, profits, employee retention, absenteeism, sick days, productivity, and of course profits.

It's not such a funny thing, that we know how important culture is, and we typically don't define it, measure it or manage it. Actually, its been around for over twenty years and now its more critical than ever! 7,000 companies already use Barrett Values Center tools, which means you can benefit from their data and decades of research. We now have a proven system for measuring, managing and shifting culture and it's available for the first time in Sarasota.

Values underpin everything we do.

When employee values are in alignment with the culture they experience at work, you get successful employees.

When the experienced values match the desired culture, you have mission alignment and a successful organization.

Earn 300 to 400 Percent More Profit

Remember the book Good to Great? It was as much a movement as a book. The book reviewed the best of the best performers of the 1990's. Everyone was talking about how to move from being good, to being great. I remember because I was a franchisor, with 35 retail travel agencies, and we were focused on perfecting systems - systems for sales processes, systems for technology (what we thought was technology in the nineties lol)!  As a result, we were great, compared to our competitors who didn't do this. And, just like today, a big challenge was recruiting and keeping the best talent.

Even then, I spoke of the idea that our most productive agent were turning in as much as 50% more work and being paid the same as their co-workers, meaning that much of their work was volunteer work and we should be appreciating them because they produced nearly all our profit. My franchisees fought me on this idea of paying or even recognizing the gifts they were receiving from these employees. The prevailing wisdom was that if I recognize them, they will want a raise and I can't afford it. I pointed out that you couldn't afford it because you were subsidizing the non-producers and creating a culture where mediocrity was rewarded the same as excellence.

Today - we have Firms of Endearment, again a book and a movement where values and purpose play a significant role. In a world that keeps evolving, we need more. We need to handle rapid change, multiple generations, technology, off-site workers, global markets, diversity, and so much more. The graphs shown above, demonstrate the performance of the great places to work and "Firms of Endearment" compared to the S&P 500 - yes, both graphs show a 13 and a 16% return vs the S&P 500 with only a 4% return. Wow - really? a 300 - 400% increase in profits and we don't measure it and know how to measure and shift it. What?!
